International Women’s Day, celebrated every year on March 8, is a reminder of the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women, as well as the need for further action towards achieving gender equality. Since 1975, International Women’s Day has been recognized by the United Nations as an occasion to celebrate progress and discuss challenges such as gender inequality, disparity, and lack of opportunities.

In India, International Women’s Day has become a significant event to look back at accomplishments as well as policy-level advancements. The Indian government has launched various initiatives to empower women in areas such as education, health, financial inclusion, and entrepreneurship. Initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao aim to enhance the ratio of child survival and girls’ education, while Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana provides support to pregnant and lactating mothers. Another area that has received importance is economic empowerment. Schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana provide collateral-free loans to women entrepreneurs, and initiatives under the National Rural Livelihood Mission have linked close to 10 crore women to self-help groups, promoting economic empowerment and development.

Also, support services such as One Stop Centres, which provide legal, medical, and psychological support to women experiencing violence, indicate a holistic approach to women’s welfare.

Thus, International Women’s Day is not merely a day to celebrate but a day to act. In the Indian context, it marks the significance of continued policy interventions, social awareness, and joint responsibility towards creating a more inclusive and equal society where women can grow and lead.
