Guru Purnima, one of the most revered festivals in India, will be celebrated on 29 July 2026. Observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Ashadha, the festival is dedicated to expressing gratitude towards teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides who illuminate the path of knowledge and self-discovery.

In 2026, the Purnima Tithi begins at 6:18 PM IST on 28 July and ends at 8:05 PM IST on 29 July, with the auspicious morning hours considered ideal for Guru Puja and prayers. The day is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima, commemorating the birth anniversary of Maharishi Veda Vyasa, the sage credited with compiling the Vedas and authoring the Mahabharata. Guru Purnima holds deep significance across Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, symbolising the eternal bond between a guru and disciple. It is believed that seeking blessings from one’s guru on this day enhances wisdom, spiritual growth, and inner clarity, owing to its association with the benevolent energy of Jupiter (Brihaspati).

Devotees mark the occasion by visiting temples, ashrams, and meditation centres, offering flowers, fruits, and sattvic meals, and participating in prayer gatherings and discourses. More than a ritual, Guru Purnima is a heartfelt reminder to acknowledge the mentors who inspire learning, shape character, and guide individuals toward a life of purpose and enlightenment.
