The Sirinat National Park bordering Mai Khao beach beckons nature lovers with immaculate white sands and evergreen pine covers. A quiet sunset stroll along this coastline, with fishing boats gently bobbling on rippling waves, takes you back in time when explorers arrived at these delicate sands in search of new opportunities.
OLD TOWN
Dedicated walking tours along Thanon Klang, Thanon Dibuk, Thanon Phang nga, Thanon Yaowarat, Thanon Krabi and Soi Romanee are great ways to experience the rich, multicultural legacies of Phuket’s Old Town. Among the early settlers were Hokkien Chinese people working in the tin mining industry — apart from Europeans and Indians — who settled in the area and built many establishments including the famous Jui Tui Shrine, which hosts the annual Vegetarian Festival. The Portuguese built unique homes, which later came to be known as Sino-European architecture — characterised by ornate facades and intricate motifs on pastel-hued buildings — that have been painstakingly restored by Thai authorities over the years and are a common sight in the Old Town. For a guided tour of a Sino-Portuguese mansion, head over to the Chinpracha House in Mueang Phuket, which is still inhabited by descendants of its original owners. The Old Town’s cross-cultural culinary delights also won the UNESCO’s Creative City Award as the City of Gastronomy in 2015. Fried noodles, satay, crab curries, fish curry and rice dishes are among the best of this city’s flavourful offerings.
BUDDHIST HERITAGE
People in Thailand are predominantly Buddhist, and Phuket has several impressive temples bearing testimony to the vibrant histories of Buddhism in the region. The intricate Thai architecture including a magnificent viharn (assembly hall) at Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most revered temple, is undoubtedly a photographer’s delight. This shrine complex also contains a bone relic of Lord Buddha inside its three-storeyed chedi (stupa). Another of the island’s oldest and most serene temples is Wat Phra Thong, known for its golden statue of a half-buried Lord Buddha. The most recognisable landmark in Phuket is the 45-m-tall Big Buddha at Nakkerd Hill in Karon, which, owing to its elevation, is among the best sunset spots in the island. On a clear weather day, it has the most breathtaking views of Chalong bay, Phuket Town and even Phang Nga Bay.
WILD SANCTUARIES
Phuket beckons nature and wildlife enthusiasts with its new Elephant Sanctuary, which rescues and allows these animals to roam free in its 30-acre lush, tropical vistas. Visitors are encouraged to hike through the verdant landscapes to observe elephants relaxing and foraging in their natural habitats. The Marine Turtle Foundation in Mai Khao is dedicated towards protecting and replenishing aquatic ecologies of the Andaman Sea in collaboration with local communities, schools, donors and government authorities. They have established a protected zone for breeding endangered sea turtles, and organise marathons and sporting events with tourists and locals to raise awareness.
